Shopping by the Ocean in Ensenada
Our last day in Ensenada we went to an area of outdoor shops by the Ocean Coast. It was fun to walk along and look at the shops and have the shopkeepers try to get my attention to come into their shop. There were not very many people there. I think the down economy has affected tourism which has hurt the Ensenada area. I enjoyed walking along and interacting with the shopkeepers. I bought a few things, but was not looking to spend much. The first thing I bought was a hat.
My sense of style was intimidating for the rest of the group, so no one wanted to have a picture with me lol. A few brave souls did have their picture taken with me that day. One was Brandon who bought a hat he was proud of.
Grace one of our translators got in on the fun. She borrowed Brandon’s hat for the photo op.
The shops were full of colorful hats, panchos, shirts, etc. It is fun to barter with the shopkeepers. Some of the young people impressed me with their bartering skills. They would tell one shopkeeper the price others had quoted for the same things. There was even a stand selling coconut drinks made in the coconut shell.
I prefer to go to such locations when I travel. I can buy stuff from locals from their small shops. I prefer that to buying stuff in a large store. That way the money goes to support a family instead of a large chain store. It also gives me more of a flavor of the culture to interact with the people. It was a great way to end our time in Ensenada.
May Day/May Flowers- Memories from Geneva Switzerland
In June 2004 I traveled to Lyon France to teach in a conversational English language camp. I enjoyed my time in Lyon and Saint Genis Laval a suburb of Lyon. One day we took the train from Lyon to Geneva Switzerland. It was a scenic train ride through Western France. Geneva is a beautiful city and definitely worth the train ride. While we were walking around Geneva, I came across a clock on the ground that was made of flowers.
We ate lunch at a sidewalk cafe on a 70 degreee day which is about 20 celsius. We all ordered hot food which caused our waitress to be concerned that we were eating hot food on a hot day. Geneva sits at the base of Mount Blanc the highest mountain in Europe. I do not think they have heat waves like we do in Nebraska. I told her that where we came from it is over 35 degrees celsius every day in the summer.
Geneva is a wonderful city to walk through. It has a lot of archetectural sites to see. Historical stes are all around the city. I even happened to see John Calvin’s chair. I was glad that I am not much of a shopper though, because as we walked around I saw the prices for Swiss watches. I hope to go back to Geneva someday and spend more time there.
Winter fun- imagine you are at the beach
It is a cold winter day here in Lincoln Nebraska. It was so cold that when I got into my van this morning, I noticed my water bottle was frozen solid. Many of my international friends in Lincoln come from places where it is never cold. Here is a little trick to help you cope with the cold weather. Pretend you are at the beach. It can give you a brief mental vacation from the cold reality of winter weather.
Unfortunately we do not have a beach in Lincoln. I have been to the beaches along the Black Sea in Constanta Romania. I enjoyed sitting in the warm sun and listening to the waves of the Sea. At the beach there are no worries. At the beach it is warm and the sun is bright. This makes me wonder where the best beaches are?
Take your mental vacation and look on the internet at some beaches and let me know where are the best beaches.
